Adult Tennis Coaching in North London - How Our Programme Works

Most adult tennis coaching is something you do once a week. Ours is designed to be something you play.

That distinction shapes everything about how our adult programme works - the way it's structured, the way it's priced, and the way the sessions themselves are coached. The goal isn't to give you a pleasant ninety minutes on a Tuesday. It's to get you genuinely better, and to make tennis a sport you compete in and enjoy for the rest of your life.

Here's how the programme works and what makes it different.

Quick Summary

Three levels - Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced · 90-minute sessions · Monthly direct debit · 45 weeks a year · Any extra class for just £1 · LTA qualified coaches · Winchmore Hill, Southgate and Enfield

You pay monthly for your regular weekly class, which runs 45 weeks a year. Crucially, you can book any additional class for just £1 - to make up a session you've missed, or simply to play more. Sessions are open, game-based and built around principles rather than prescriptions, so you develop your own game rather than being forced into one model.

How the Structure Works

You pay a monthly direct debit for your regular class. That class runs for 45 weeks of the year.

The breaks are:

The three school half terms - February, May and October

        Three weeks over Christmas

One additional week that moves year to year depending on where Easter falls - either around Easter or sometimes mid-August

That's the framework. But it's what sits on top of it that makes the programme work.

Any Extra Class for £1

This is the single most important thing to understand about our adult programme.

While you have your regular slot, you can always book any additional class for just £1.

Obviously that covers you if you miss your usual session or it falls in a break week - you simply book into another class and you've lost nothing. But it goes much further than that. Even if you've already been to your lesson that week, you can come to another. And another. And another. As many classes as you can physically get to, each one for £1.

Why we do this

Because volume is what makes you better. There's no way around it. An adult playing once a week improves slowly. An adult playing three times a week improves dramatically - and the only thing standing between most people and that is cost and rigidity.

So we removed both. We want our adult players to progress through the programme and come out the other side as competitive players - entering tournaments, playing on our Smart Ladder, joining one of our clubs, coming to our social events and American tournaments. We want tennis to become a sport you compete in and enjoy, not just something you do once a week in a lesson.

That only happens with volume. So we've priced volume at £1.

Flexibility That Fits an Adult's Life

The other reason this structure matters: life gets in the way.

Work, childcare, travel, everything else. A rigid programme where you must attend the same slot every week for a fixed block simply doesn't fit most adults' lives, and every missed week is money and progress wasted.

With our structure, if you can't make Tuesday, you go Thursday. If you're away for two weeks, you catch up when you're back. Nothing is lost. That flexibility is what makes consistent improvement realistic for adults with real lives.

How the Sessions Are Coached

Walk into one of our adult sessions and you won't see players lined up in a queue. You won't see a coach basket-feeding balls one at a time while everyone else waits.

You'll see people playing.

Principles, not prescriptions

We teach core foundational principles - getting your racket behind the ball, turning sideways, being stopped, using trajectory, using different sensations to develop different shots. These are the things that genuinely improve players and let them make big jumps.

But we don't force everyone into one technique. Every adult has their own body, their own way of moving, their own coordination. A one-size-fits-all approach simply doesn't work for adults. So we guide with the key overriding principles and then let players express themselves and develop the way *they* want to play tennis.

That's the balance: clear principles that make you better, applied to the game that suits you.

Every session has a competitive element

Every class includes competition, development work, and a variety of drills and exercises. Plenty of our players come two or three times a week and find that's all the tennis they need - they don't feel they need to join a club or play socially elsewhere, because they're already competing and developing every session.

Pressure Bias Training

As you move into intermediate and especially advanced, our pressure bias training comes into its own.

The principle is simple: we replicate match pressure in training, so that your decision-making, shot selection and shots themselves hold up when it actually matters. A shot that works in a relaxed rally but collapses at 4-4 in a tight set isn't a shot you own yet.

This connects to how we think about learning generally - the journey from learning a skill, to practising it, to training it, to testing it, to competing with it. Our group training at intermediate and advanced level is heavily focused on that train-and-test space: taking shots you've learned and practised and asking whether you can produce them in a structured competitive environment where the result doesn't really matter - so that when you get to genuine competition, you don't lose them under pressure.

And if a skill starts to fail under pressure, the answer isn't to push harder. It's to drop back a stage, get more repetitions, and build back up.

The Three Levels

Beginners - building the ability to rally, developing reception skills, learning to serve consistently, and getting the rules and scoring to the point where they're automatic.

Intermediate - your playing identity starts to emerge. Are you looking to lengthen rallies or shorten them? And how - through power, creativity, space or spin?

Advanced - pressure bias training in full, with a focus on producing your game under genuine competitive pressure.

All groups are mixed, which means part of the challenge as you move up is physical - the ball gets hit harder, and you need to cope with that.

How You Move Up

Each stage has its own set of skills and teaching points, and it's on the mastery and understanding of those that players move up.

It's worth being honest: this isn't as black and white as our junior programme, where players tick off specific competencies. Adult progression is more coach-experience based. Can you cope physically with the next level? Do you have the shots to compete there? Can you handle the pace? Those are judgement calls our coaches make based on watching you play.

If you're not sure which level you belong in, just ask - we'd far rather place you correctly than have you in a group that's wrong for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the payment work?

A monthly direct debit for your regular weekly class, which runs 45 weeks a year.

What happens if I miss a class?

Book into any other class for £1. Nothing is lost.

Can I really attend extra classes for £1?

Yes. Any additional class, any week, for £1 - whether you've made your regular session or not. As many as you can get to.

How long are sessions?

90 minutes across all levels.

When are the breaks?

The three school half terms (February, May, October), three weeks over Christmas, and one additional week that moves depending on where Easter falls.

Which level should I join?

Beginners if you're new or still building the ability to rally consistently. Intermediate once your shot quality and movement have developed. Advanced for experienced, competitive players. If you're unsure, get in touch and we'll help place you.

How do I move up a level?

It's based on your coach's judgement - whether you have the shots, the movement and the physical capacity for the next level. It's less rigid than our junior programme.

Will I be lined up waiting for a turn?

No. Our sessions are open and game-based. You'll be playing, not queuing or being fed balls one at a time.

Is there anything beyond the lessons?

Yes - tournaments, our Smart Ladder, clubs, social events and American doubles tournaments. The programme is designed to lead into all of it.
