Intermediate Adult Tennis Coaching in North London - PH Tennis
Intermediate Adult Tennis Coaching in North London - PH Tennis
Intermediate is where tennis coaching becomes properly complete.
You're no longer just learning to rally. You're developing technical skills, tactical understanding, emotional control, mentality, singles, doubles and serving - the whole game. And crucially, this is where you start working out what kind of tennis player you actually want to be.
It's the level where tennis stops being something you're learning and starts being something you're playing.
Quick Summary
Adult intermediate · 90 minutes · Up to 10 players, five per court · Monthly direct debit · Any extra class for £1 · LTA qualified coaches · Winchmore Hill, Southgate and Enfield
Intermediate covers every aspect of the game - technical, tactical, mental, singles and doubles - while you develop your own playing identity. Sessions sit firmly in the train-and-test space, using pressure games to make sure your skills hold up under real challenge. It's also the level where you can start entering intermediate tournaments, join a club, and play low-level team tennis.
Everything, All At Once
Intermediate is proper, complete tennis coaching. You're getting:
• Technical skills - developing the shots themselves
• Tactical skills - understanding how to construct and win points
• Emotional control and mentality - the side of tennis that decides tight matches
• Singles and doubles - two genuinely different games
• Serving - building a serve you can rely on under pressure
You're elevating every aspect of your game simultaneously - which is what makes this level so rewarding.
Developing Your Identity
Alongside all of that, intermediate is where your playing identity starts to take shape.
The starting question is one we've built our coaching around: are you a player who wants to lengthen points - staying consistent, grinding opponents down, waiting for the obvious opportunity? Or one who wants to shorten them - taking the initiative, accepting risk, going after chances earlier?
Then comes the nuance: *how* do you want to do it? Through the quality of your shots? Through power? Through creativity? Through space? Through spin? Two players who both want to shorten points might go about it in completely different ways - and finding your way is the point.
But you don't have to know yet
Here's the important part. Plenty of players at this stage have no idea what they are, what kind of player they want to be, or what shots they want to own. That's entirely normal - and it's exactly why we don't ask you to pick.
Instead, we make sure you get the full breadth across all of it. Even if you're naturally a lengthener, you'll develop the skills of a shortener. You need to actually *experience* what it feels like to play both ways before you can possibly know which one is you.
It's guided self-discovery: developing every skill you need to be an effective tennis player, while gradually working out which of them are going to be *your* skills.
Train and Test - Pressure That Prepares You
Intermediate sessions live in the train-and-test part of the learning journey.
The principle is straightforward: a skill you can produce in a comfortable rally isn't a skill you own. So we build lots of pressure games into sessions - developing your skills in an environment that's genuinely challenging and that replicates the level above, whether that's real competition or a higher-level group.
The point is that when you get to something that actually matters - a tournament, a team match, a tight set - your shots, your decision-making and your temperament are already tested. You've been there before.
Playing Different Types of Players
One of the things that makes intermediate genuinely interesting is the range of players in the group.
Some hit the ball hard but with less consistency. Others are metronomically consistent but don't generate much pace. Some are creative, some are relentless. Every one of them poses a different problem.
Learning to counteract those different challenges - to work out what's actually beating you and adjust - is one of the most valuable skills you can develop. It's also something you simply can't learn against a ball machine or a coach feeding you the same ball repeatedly. You learn it by playing real people who play differently to you.
Coach-Led and Theme-Led
Despite all the individual development, sessions remain firmly coach-led and theme-led. This isn't a free-for-all.
The themes ensure everyone develops the full range, regardless of their emerging identity. Just because you like to lengthen points doesn't mean you don't need the skills of a player who does the opposite - you'll face those players constantly, and you need to understand what they're doing to you. The structure is what makes the self-discovery genuinely informed.
Where Intermediate Takes You
This is the level where tennis opens up beyond the lesson:
• Intermediate tournaments - you'll be at the level to enter and compete
• Joining a club - playing outside the lessons
• Team tennis - low-level men's and ladies' team tennis becomes realistic
That's the whole point of the programme. We want tennis to become a sport you compete in and enjoy, not just something you do once a week.
An Honest Word on Levels
Worth knowing: our levels generally sit a little higher than most.
We get our beginners good quite quickly, which means our beginner groups are strong - and that pushes our intermediate standard up too. We fairly regularly have players arrive from another club or coach saying they're intermediate, and they're a better fit for our beginner group. Equally, players who've been in an advanced group elsewhere often sit naturally in our intermediate class.
None of this matters much in practice. If you feel like you're an intermediate player - you're playing regularly, you can rally, serve and play points - then book the class. Just don't be surprised if we suggest something different. It's not a judgement, our levels just sit where they sit.
And because our beginner and intermediate classes run at the same time, movement between them happens naturally in either direction as needed. Nothing is fixed. You'll end up in the right group.
How the Sessions Feel
Open, active and game-based. You won't be queuing or being basket-fed balls one at a time - you'll be playing.
We teach core principles that genuinely improve players, then let you develop the game that suits your body and your instincts. Every adult moves differently and coordinates differently. A one-size-fits-all technique doesn't work, so we don't use one.
How the Programme Works
You pay a monthly direct debit for your regular weekly class, which runs 45 weeks a year. And you can book any additional class for just £1 - to make up a missed session, or simply to play more.
At intermediate, this matters more than ever. Volume is what drives improvement, and at £1 a session there's nothing stopping you playing two or three times a week.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I'm intermediate?
If you're playing regularly, can rally consistently, serve overarm reliably and play points, book the intermediate class. If we think you'd be better placed elsewhere, we'll say - and moving between groups is easy.
I'm intermediate at another club - will I be intermediate here?
Possibly not. Our levels sit a little higher than most, so some players arriving as intermediates are a better fit for our beginner group. It's genuinely not a judgement - and because both classes run at the same time, movement in either direction is straightforward.
What will I work on?
Everything - technical, tactical, mental, singles, doubles, serving - while developing your own playing identity.
What if I don't know what kind of player I am?
That's completely normal, and it's why sessions cover the full breadth. You'll experience playing both ways before working out which is you.
How many people are in a class?
Up to 10, with five per court.
Can I play in tournaments at this level?
Yes. Intermediate tournaments, club tennis and low-level team tennis all become realistic.
Do I need proper tennis shoes?
Yes. At this level you're moving enough to need the support that proper tennis shoes provide.
What if I miss a week?
Book into any other class for £1.
