Tennis Coaching for 14, 15 and 16 Year Olds in North London - PH Yellow at PH Tennis

PH Yellow is the final stage of our junior pathway - and in many ways it's the most important.

By fourteen, players are on a full court with a proper ball and a proper racket. The tennis is real. But what makes this stage matter isn't the technical development. It's what happens around it. This is the age where a player decides, often without realising, whether tennis is something they did as a child or something they'll do for the rest of their life.

PH Yellow is built around that. Here's what it involves.

Quick Summary

Ages 14-16 · 90 minutes · Max 12 players · Full court, standard yellow ball · LTA qualified coaches · Available at Winchmore Hill, Southgate and Enfield

PH Yellow is the end of the junior pathway. Players use proper balls, proper courts and proper rackets, with a stronger match focus and the introduction of doubles tactics. Beyond the tennis, it's about what comes next - competing in tournaments and teams, getting into coaching, or simply building tennis into a lifelong habit. Performance groups (U14 and U16) run alongside, with players able to move between. After Yellow, players move into our 16-18 groups and on into adult tennis.

What Is PH Yellow?

PH Yellow is our programme for players aged fourteen to sixteen, and it's the end of the junior tennis pathway.

Everything is now the real thing. Full-size court, standard yellow ball, and by this age players will have proper rackets. There's no transition equipment, no adapted anything. They're playing tennis exactly as it's played.

Sessions remain 90 minutes with a maximum of twelve players.

The Tennis - Match Focus and Doubles

On court, players continue developing everything established at Green: their playing identity, the trajectory principle, and the individual sensations that suit their game. But the emphasis shifts.

There's a stronger match focus at this stage - applying their game in competitive situations rather than developing it in isolation. And we introduce doubles, which brings a whole additional layer of tactical work: positioning, partnership, court coverage, and the very different decision-making that doubles demands.

For most players, doubles is also the format they'll play most in adult tennis - in clubs, in teams, socially. Learning it properly now sets them up for decades of playing.

More Than Tennis - What This Stage Is Really About

Here's what makes PH Yellow different from every stage before it.

The core focus is no longer just tennis. It's about looking at what comes next, and what skills a player needs to develop on court to make the most of everything tennis can offer them. Because at this age, tennis becomes a vehicle - and players can use it however they want.

As a player. Competing in tournaments, getting involved in the club, playing in teams. For players who want to compete, this is where they build the habits and the network that carry them into adult tennis.

As a coach. A lot of our Yellow players start helping out with the younger sessions. Some do it for their Duke of Edinburgh Award. Some do it because it's a genuinely good way to earn money through summers, around A Levels and at university. And for some, it's the start of a career. Either way, it develops leadership, confidence and a real skill set alongside their own tennis.

As a hobby for life. And some players simply want a nice social hour and a half a week, playing a sport they love. That's just as valid - and honestly, it might be the most valuable outcome of all.

Whichever route a player takes, the goal at this age is the same: build a healthy habit and a sport for life. We want players to love coming, to love tennis, and to want to keep playing forever. Get that right at sixteen and they have a sport they'll play into their seventies.

Tournaments, Teams and Competing

We actively encourage PH Yellow players to enter tournaments and get involved in competitive play. It's where the coaching gets tested, where players find out what their game is actually made of, and where the friendships and rivalries that keep people playing for life tend to form.

Getting involved in the club and playing in teams is a natural step at this stage, and one that plugs players straight into the adult game when the time comes.

Getting Into Coaching

This deserves its own mention because it's one of the most valuable things PH Yellow offers.

Many of our players at this age start helping with younger sessions. It's a genuinely brilliant thing for a teenager to do:

It counts towards a Duke of Edinburgh Award

It's a flexible, well-paid way to earn money through summers, sixth form and university

It builds leadership and confidence in a way little else does at that age

For some, it becomes a career - a number of coaches start exactly this way

If your child enjoys tennis and is looking for something meaningful to do alongside their studies, this is a route worth knowing about.

The Performance Pathway

Alongside PH Yellow, our performance groups run for U14 and U16 players - a more intensive route for those with the level, attitude and motivation to pursue the game seriously.

As with Green, players can move between the two. The pathway isn't a one-time decision at fourteen. Players develop at different rates, and motivation can arrive late. A player in PH Yellow can move across to performance whenever their level, attitude and commitment are right.

What Happens After Yellow?

PH Yellow runs to sixteen - finishing the summer after GCSEs.

From there, we have junior groups for 16-18 year olds (sixth form and college age), which act as the bridge into our adult programme. Many of our long-standing players go straight into our intermediate or advanced adult groups once they've finished the junior coaching pathway.

Either way, there's a clear route from PH Yellow into adult tennis - which is exactly the point. The junior pathway isn't the end of anything. It's the start of a lifetime of playing.

The Coaching Approach

PH Yellow continues our constraints-led coaching philosophy. At this age, with players developing their own identity and making their own tactical decisions, coaching that dictates would be actively counterproductive. We create situations, they find solutions - which is what produces players who genuinely own their game and can think for themselves on court.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is PH Yellow for?

Players aged fourteen to sixteen.

Is my child too old to start tennis at 14?

Not at all. Our coaches assess each player individually and adapt sessions so newer players are supported while playing alongside more experienced ones. Plenty of people take up tennis far later and go on to play for life.

What's different about Yellow compared to Green?

Standard yellow balls on full courts, a stronger match focus, the introduction of doubles, and a broader emphasis on what tennis can offer beyond the lessons - competing, coaching, or simply building a lifelong habit.

Can my child get involved in coaching?

Yes, and we encourage it. Many PH Yellow players help with younger sessions - for their Duke of Edinburgh Award, to earn money through sixth form and university, or as a first step towards a coaching career.

Are there tournaments?

Yes, and we actively encourage players to enter them, as well as getting involved in club and team tennis.

What's the difference between PH Yellow and the performance groups?

Performance U14 and U16 are more intensive routes for players with the level, attitude and motivation to pursue the game seriously. Players can move between the two as their level and commitment develop.

What happens after Yellow?

Players move into our 16-18 junior groups, and from there into our adult programme. Many long-standing players go straight into our intermediate or advanced adult groups.

Are the coaches qualified?

Yes. All coaches are LTA qualified with appropriate DBS, first aid and safeguarding certifications.
