Tennis Coaching for 4 and 5 Year Olds in North London - PH Blue at PH Tennis
Tennis Coaching for 4 and 5 Year Olds in North London - PH Blue at PH Tennis
Starting tennis at four or five years old is one of the best things a child can do.
Not because they'll turn professional. Because learning to move, coordinate, send and receive a ball at that age builds physical and cognitive foundations that benefit them for life - in sport and beyond.
But not all tennis coaching for young children is equal. The equipment, the court size, the teaching approach, the session length and the coaching philosophy all determine whether a child thrives, struggles or simply loses interest after a few weeks.
PH Blue is our programme specifically designed for four and five year olds. Here's exactly what it involves, why we've built it the way we have, and what your child will experience from their very first session.
Quick Summary
Ages 4-5 · 90 minutes · Max 8 players per coach · LTA qualified coaches · Available at Winchmore Hill, Southgate and Enfield
PH Blue runs across all three of our North London venues. Sessions are 90 minutes, run in small groups with a maximum of eight players per coach, and follow a constraints-led coaching philosophy that lets children learn by doing rather than being told. Progress is tracked online and children earn bronze, silver and gold medals as they advance through three levels before moving up to PH Purple.
What Is PH Blue?
PH Blue is the first stage of the PH Tennis junior coaching pathway, designed specifically for children aged four and five.
It's built around how young children actually learn - through exploration, play and repetition in the right environment - rather than instruction and correction. Every element of the programme, from the court size to the session length to the equipment used, has been chosen to give children the best possible start in tennis.
The Coaching Approach - Constraints-Led Learning
The foundation of PH Blue is a constraints-led coaching philosophy. This is worth understanding because it's quite different from how many people imagine children being taught sport.
In a traditional coaching model, a coach demonstrates a skill and tells a child how to perform it. In a constraints-led model, the coach designs the environment and the task so that the child naturally discovers the right movement or technique themselves.
At PH Blue level this might look like: instead of telling a four year old how to hit a ball, giving them a task that only works if they make contact in the right way. The child figures it out. The solution they find is their own - and because of that, it sticks.
We talk in sensations rather than technical instructions. Asking a child to "tap the ball" tells them something they can feel and replicate. Telling them to "pronate their wrist on contact" does not.
This approach works particularly well at this age because young children aren't ready to process and apply technical instruction in the way older players can. What they can do is explore, experiment and find solutions when they're put in the right situation. That's what we give them.
Why 90 Minutes?
This is often the first question parents ask - and understandably so. Ninety minutes sounds like a long time for a four year old.
Here's the thinking behind it.
Children's concentration at this age comes in waves. They're engaged, then they switch off, then they're back. That's completely normal and expected. A 45-minute or one-hour lesson loses a significant portion of that time to the natural ebb and flow of a young child's attention.
A 90-minute session works with that pattern rather than against it. If a child is in and out of full concentration throughout, a longer session means we still accumulate enough quality time to make real improvements. We don't have to rush from one thing to the next. We can let children spend longer figuring things out - which ties directly into the constraints-led approach. Discovery takes time.
The result is that PH Blue players actually get better. Not in theory - in practice. Parents consistently notice the difference compared with shorter programmes their children have tried elsewhere.
Equipment and Court Setup
Everything about the physical environment at PH Blue is adapted for four and five year olds.
Rackets
Children use 17 and 19 inch junior rackets - the smallest available - which are proportionate to their size and allow them to develop proper movement and contact habits from the start.
Balls
We use red balls throughout PH Blue. Red balls are lower compression than standard tennis balls, which means they travel slower, bounce lower and give children more time to react and position themselves. They're the right tool for learning at this age.
Net height
We lower the net significantly from standard height. This is deliberate. A high net at this age encourages children to hit upwards to clear it - which is exactly the opposite of what we want them to learn. A lower net teaches players to hit forwards and through the ball, building the right contact habits early.
Court size
We use dedicated blue baselines which bring the playing area in even closer than a standard mini tennis court. Shorter distances mean more rallies, more touches and more learning opportunities per session. Children experience success earlier, which keeps them engaged and motivated.
What Children Work On in PH Blue
Each session covers a range of fundamental skills appropriate for this age group:
Sending skills
Learning to tap and self-feed - understanding how to make clean contact with the ball and direct it where they want it to go.
Cooperative skills
Throwing and catching using larger balls. These develop hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness and the ability to read a moving object - all of which transfer directly to tennis.
Reception skills
How to receive the ball, how to read where it's going, and how to move and position themselves to make contact. Getting into the right position is one of the most important and most overlooked skills in junior tennis.
Overhead coordination
Every single PH Blue session begins with overhead serving and overhead coordination work. We do this because the overhead is one of the most important motor patterns in tennis - and one of the hardest to develop later if the foundations aren't laid early. Starting every session with it means children build this movement pattern consistently over time.
The PH Blue Progress Tracker
Every PH Blue player has an online progress profile that parents can log into at any time.
Coaches update each player's profile every one to two weeks, recording what they're working on, how they're progressing and what the focus for upcoming sessions will be. Parents don't have to wait for a conversation at the gate to know how their child is getting on.
Progress through PH Blue is structured around three levels:
Blue One - Bronze
The starting point. Children work on the foundational skills of the programme.
Blue Two - Silver
Players who have demonstrated consistent progress through Blue One move to this level. Skills become more refined and tasks more challenging.
Blue Three - Gold
The final stage of PH Blue. Children who complete Blue Three have developed the skills, habits and understanding to progress to the next stage of the pathway.
When a child passes each level, they receive a medal at their session - a bronze medal for Blue One, silver for Blue Two and gold for Blue Three. For four and five year olds, these moments matter. They mark real achievement and give children something tangible to work towards.
After Blue Three Gold, players move up to PH Purple - the next stage of the PH Tennis junior pathway, designed for six and seven year olds.
Our Coaches
All PH Blue sessions are delivered by LTA qualified coaches. Every coach working with children at PH Tennis holds an appropriate DBS check, first aid certification and child protection training. They work in PH Tennis uniform so they're easy to identify, and they're trained in the constraints-led coaching methodology that underpins everything we do at this age group.
How to Get Started
We offer an extended taster period for new PH Blue joiners, specifically designed for this age group.
We know that four and five year olds sometimes need time to settle into a new environment. Three weeks gives the child time to get comfortable, understand what the sessions involve and start to find their feet. It gives parents time to see the programme in action and ask questions. And in our experience, after three weeks the child is almost always asking to come back.
After the taster period, if you'd like to continue, PH Blue runs on a monthly direct debit. This includes all 39 term-time lessons per year.
Holiday courses
Direct debit members also get access to our holiday courses - three-hour sessions running across ten weeks of school holidays per year - for just £1 per course. For families who want to keep their child active and improving during the school holidays, this represents exceptional value.

A maximum of eight players per coach.
Are the coaches qualified?
Yes. All coaches are LTA qualified and hold appropriate DBS, first aid and child protection certifications.
What equipment does my child need?
We provide the balls and court setup. Your child will need a 17 or 19 inch junior racket. If you're not sure which to get, speak to our team - we can advise or help you find the right option in our shop.
How does the progress tracker work?
Parents receive login details for the online progress tracker. Coaches update each player's profile every one to two weeks with notes on what they're working on and how they're progressing.
What happens when my child finishes PH Blue?
After achieving Blue Three Gold, children move up to PH Purple - our programme for six and seven year olds.
How do I book?
