The Three Pillars of Motivation - What Actually Keeps a Player Coming Back

Ask why one player thrives and another drifts away, and the answer is rarely talent. Far more often, it's motivation - and motivation isn't one single thing.

Different players are driven by different things, and a great learning environment has to feed all of them. We think about this in terms of three core motivators, and getting them right is what turns a one-off taster into a lifelong player. This article explains what they are and why they matter so much.

Quick Summary

Players are motivated by different things, and a good environment caters to all of them. The three main motivators are broadly: the drive to improve, the enjoyment of competition, and the pleasure of the activity itself - the intrinsic enjoyment of playing and being part of it. Great coaching creates an environment where all three are satisfied, so that every player - whatever drives them - finds a reason to keep coming back.

Why Motivation Matters More Than Talent

Here's a truth that surprises people: the single biggest factor in a player's long-term development isn't how naturally gifted they are. It's whether they keep coming back.

A modestly talented player who loves it and plays for years will comfortably overtake a naturally gifted one who drifts away. Consistency compounds; talent without motivation fades. So the most important job we have as coaches isn't just to teach good tennis - it's to create an environment players genuinely want to return to, week after week, year after year.

And because different players are motivated by different things, that environment has to satisfy a range of drives at once. That's where the three pillars come in.

The Three Motivators

Broadly, players are driven by three things. Most players feel all three to some degree, but usually one dominates - and a good environment feeds all of them.

Improvement. Many players are driven by the satisfaction of getting better. They want to see progress, master new skills, feel themselves developing. For these players, visible improvement, clear challenges and a sense of forward momentum are what keep them engaged.

Competition. Tennis is a sport, and for many players the competitive element is the whole appeal. They love to compete, to test themselves, to win. For these players, an environment rich in competition - matches, games, challenges, an element of contest in every session - is what makes it worthwhile.

Intrinsic enjoyment. For others, the primary draw is simply the enjoyment of playing - the fun, the social side, being outdoors, being part of a group. For these players, the experience itself is the reward, and an environment that's welcoming, sociable and genuinely enjoyable is what brings them back.

Building an Environment for All Three

The challenge, and the skill, is that a single group will contain all three types of player at once. One child is there to win, another to improve, another just to have fun with their friends. A one-dimensional session - all competition, or all technical drilling, or all play - will only ever satisfy one of them and lose the others.

So our sessions are deliberately built to feed all three. There's competition in every session, for the competitors. There's genuine development and visible progress, for the improvers. And the whole environment is enjoyable, welcoming and social, for those who play for the love of it. Every player, whatever drives them, finds their reason to come back.

This is what we mean when we talk about creating a positive experience. It isn't vague warmth - it's the deliberate work of building an environment that satisfies every motivation in the room.

What This Means for You or Your Child

In our coaching, the three motivators shape how every session is designed:

We build competition, development and enjoyment into every session, so every player is catered for

We recognise that different players are driven by different things, and don't force one mould on everyone

We focus on creating an environment players genuinely want to return to - because coming back is what drives long-term development

Whether your child plays to win, to improve or simply to have fun, there's a reason for them to keep coming

Get the motivation right and everything else follows. A player who wants to be there will always outlast and outdevelop one who doesn't - which is why creating that positive experience is our number one concern in every single session.

See It in Practice
