Individual Tennis Lessons for Children in North London - PH Tennis
Individual Tennis Lessons for Children in North London - PH Tennis
Group coaching is where children should start, and for most it's all they'll ever need. But there are moments where one-to-one attention makes a real difference - getting unstuck from a particular level, tidying up a technique, or accelerating a child who's hungry to improve.
That's what our individual lessons are for. Here's how they work and when they're worth adding.
Quick Summary
Mini (ages up to orange): 30-45 minutes · Juniors: 45-60 minutes · One-to-one with an LTA qualified coach · One-off, blocks or monthly direct debit · Winchmore Hill, Southgate and Enfield
We recommend individual lessons as an addition to the group programme, not a replacement. They're ideal for children stuck on a particular skill or level, or for those with ambitions to compete who want to refine their technique - something far easier to do one-to-one than in a group. Same coaches, same coaching philosophy, same booking options as our group programme.
Our Honest Advice - Groups First
We'll be straight about this, because it matters.
If your child is only going to do one type of coaching, we'd recommend the group programme every time. Group coaching gives children the rallying, the competition, the social side and the sheer volume of playing that develops a genuine tennis player. It's the foundation, and it's where everyone should start.
Individual lessons come into their own as an addition to that. If your child is doing a group session and you want to accelerate their learning, or there's something specific they're struggling with, that's exactly where one-to-one attention becomes valuable.
So the ideal isn't individual *instead of* group. It's individual *alongside* group, for children who want or need that extra push.
When an Individual Lesson Really Helps
There are three situations where we'd genuinely recommend adding individual coaching.
Getting unstuck. Our group programme runs a set of competencies, with children marked off towards levels and medals as they progress. Sometimes a child gets stuck - on a particular level, or a particular skill that isn't clicking in the group setting. A few individual lessons focused precisely on that sticking point can be exactly what gets them moving again.
Serious ambitions. If a child has ambitions to become a stronger player - competing, playing tournaments, taking their tennis more seriously - individual coaching is where technique really gets refined. Tidying up and improving technique is much easier one-to-one than in a group, simply because of the undivided attention.
Accelerating. Some children are just hungry for it. They love the game, they want to get better faster, and they've got the appetite for more court time. Individual lessons let them progress at their own pace without waiting for the group.
Mini Individual Lessons (Up to Orange)
For younger children, up to orange stage, individual lessons run for 30 to 45 minutes.
The shorter length is deliberate, for two reasons. First, it matches young children's attention spans - beyond 45 minutes of focused one-to-one, you get diminishing returns at this age. Second, it fits a scheduling combination that works brilliantly.
The winning combination
A lot of our mini individual lessons are scheduled right before one of the child's regular group sessions. So a child comes in, does a focused 30 or 45 minute one-to-one, and then goes straight into their 90-minute group lesson.
It's a genuinely effective pairing. The individual lesson sharpens something specific - a technique, a sticking point - and then the group session immediately gives the child the chance to use it in live, competitive play. Parents like it too, because it's one trip rather than two.
Junior Individual Lessons (45-60 Minutes)
For older juniors, individual lessons run for 45 minutes to an hour.
There's a bit more scheduling flexibility here. Juniors can take a 45-minute individual slot, or step into our hour-long adult individual slots - which opens up more times across the schedule to fit around school, other commitments and the rest of the family.
At this age the technical refinement really matters. Players developing their game seriously benefit hugely from time spent one-to-one, ironing out the details that are hard to address when a coach is splitting attention across a group.
What Makes Our Individual Lessons Different
We'll be honest: there's nothing especially unusual about how we *structure* individual lessons compared to any other good coach. A one-to-one is a one-to-one.
What's different is the *content* - and that's the same thing that makes our whole programme different.
In individual lessons we continue using the concepts that run through everything we do: the constraints-led approach, teaching through sensations, using ball trajectory for decision-making, and developing player archetypes - even from a young age, understanding whether a child likes to shorten points or lengthen them.
This is the coaching content that's unique to us, and it's why our players improve quicker and better than they would elsewhere. An individual lesson simply delivers that same distinctive approach with a child's full, undivided coach attention.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should my child do individual lessons instead of group?
No - we recommend group coaching as the foundation for every child. Individual lessons are best added alongside group sessions, not as a replacement.
When is an individual lesson worth it?
When a child is stuck on a particular skill or level, when they have serious ambitions to compete and want to refine their technique, or when they simply want to accelerate their progress.
How long are the lessons?
Mini lessons (up to orange stage) are 30-45 minutes, matched to younger children's attention spans. Junior lessons are 45-60 minutes.
Can my child do an individual lesson before their group session?
Yes, and it's a great combination. Many families schedule a mini individual lesson right before the child's 90-minute group session, so they can immediately put what they've worked on into live play.
Who coaches the individual lessons?
The same LTA qualified coaches who deliver our group programme.
How do I book?
Submit an enquiry or call us, and we'll arrange it around coach and court availability. You can book one-off lessons, blocks, or set up a monthly direct debit.
Are the lessons different from other coaches' one-to-ones?
Structurally, no. What's different is the content - our constraints-led approach, teaching through sensations, trajectory-based decision-making and player archetypes - which is what makes our players improve faster.
