Tennis Coaching for 10 and 11 Year Olds in North London - PH Orange at PH Tennis
Tennis Coaching for 10 and 11 Year Olds in North London - PH Orange at PH Tennis
PH Orange is the stage where children step onto a big court for the first time - and as far as they're concerned, start playing properly grown-up tennis.
It's the final stage of our mini tennis pathway and a genuinely exciting one. The court opens up, the rallies get longer, topspin enters the picture, and the game becomes as much about movement, recovery and tactics as it is about hitting the ball. It's also where we begin to identify the players who might progress into our performance pathway.
Here's what PH Orange involves and why it's such a significant step.
Quick Summary
Ages 10-11 · 90 minutes · Max 12 players across 2 big courts · LTA qualified coaches · Available at Winchmore Hill, Southgate and Enfield
PH Orange moves children onto a big court for the first time, using an orange baseline and a slightly lowered net. The focus shifts to topspin, trajectory and shot selection, alongside the movement, recovery and footwork that a bigger court demands. Children can enter orange tournaments, and this is the stage where players may be identified for our Performance Green pathway. Progress runs through three levels (Orange One, Two and Three - bronze, silver, gold). The same taster, monthly direct debit and £1 holiday courses apply as across all our mini tennis stages.
What Is PH Orange?
PH Orange is our programme for children aged ten and eleven, and it's the last step on the mini tennis pathway before junior tennis proper.
The big change is the court. Children move onto a full-size court for the first time, with an orange baseline laid down between the main baseline and the service line, and a slightly lowered net to play over. For the children, this feels like a major milestone - it's the first time they're playing on what they see as a proper, grown-up court. That sense of stepping up is a real motivator at this age.
New Sensations - Topspin, Trajectory and Shot Selection
PH Orange introduces the sensations that unlock modern tennis.
Building on the tap, push and stroke from earlier stages, children now start learning brushes and sweeps - the movements that create topspin. But more importantly, they begin to understand trajectory: how the flight of the ball relates to the shot, and how to match trajectories to make the right shot selection.
This is where tennis starts to become a thinking game. Children learn to choose between:
• A topspin shot, using the brush sensation
• A flat shot, using the push
• Chipping, chopping and slicing on balls that are rising
Understanding when to use each - and how the trajectory of the incoming ball shapes that choice - is the foundation of genuine shot selection. It's a big conceptual leap, and PH Orange is where it begins.
A Bigger Court Changes Everything - Movement and Recovery
When the court gets this much bigger, tennis becomes far more physical and tactical - and a whole new set of skills comes into focus.
Suddenly the game is about space. Where is the open court? How do you cover it? Crucially, children now have to learn recovery - getting back into the right position between shots, and during the rally, so they're best placed for whatever comes next. A great shot is worth little if you're then stranded out of position for the reply.
So PH Orange places real focus on recovery, footwork, intensity and effort. Children learn that competing on a full court is as much about how you move as how you hit - and that the work between shots often matters more than the shots themselves. This is where the athletic side of tennis genuinely begins.
New to Tennis or Joining Midway? No Problem
As with all our stages, children can join PH Orange without having come through the earlier ones. The lessons are adapted so that newer players can learn the basics while still playing and competing alongside everyone else.
One of the most effective tools we use is varying the number of touches and bounces. In the same game, a more experienced child might play proper tennis rules - one bounce, one touch - while a child who has just started might be allowed two bounces, two touches, or even unlimited touches to keep the ball in play. The two can still rally and compete against each other, just playing to slightly different rules.
This is our constraints-led approach in action: by adjusting the constraints for each child, we challenge everyone at the right level at the same time. The experienced player is stretched, the newcomer is supported, and both are genuinely competing and improving.
Tournaments and the Performance Pathway
Like PH Red, every child in PH Orange can enter orange tournaments. These are open to anyone attending lessons at the appropriate colour, giving all children the chance to compete, test themselves and apply what they're learning.
PH Orange is also where we begin to identify players who might progress onto our Performance Green classes, and from there into our performance programme. While every child benefits from the same high-quality coaching, those showing particular ability, commitment and potential may be invited to take the next step on the performance side. It's the bridge between mini tennis and serious junior development.
The Coaching Approach
PH Orange continues our constraints-led coaching philosophy. Rather than dictating technique, we design situations that let children discover the right movements, trajectories and tactical choices for themselves - which is exactly how genuine understanding and shot selection develop. We keep the focus on sensations the children can feel and repeat, even as those sensations become more sophisticated.
Court, Equipment and Session Length
Court - a big (full-size) court, with an orange baseline laid between the main baseline and the service line, played over a slightly lowered net.
Session length - 90 minutes, consistent across all our mini tennis stages.
Groups - a maximum of twelve players per coach, across two courts.
Progress Tracking and Medals
Every PH Orange player has an online progress profile that parents can log into at any time, updated regularly by their coach. Progress runs through three levels, the same clear structure as across our mini tennis programme:
• Orange One - Bronze
• Orange Two - Silver
• Orange Three - Gold
A medal is awarded at each level. PH Orange is the final stage of the mini tennis pathway - from here, children progress into junior tennis, and selected players may move onto the performance pathway.
Our Coaches
All PH Orange sessions are delivered by LTA qualified coaches, each holding an appropriate DBS check, first aid certification and safeguarding training. They coach in PH Tennis uniform and are trained in our constraints-led methodology.
How to Get Started
As with all our mini tennis stages, we offer an extended taster period for new joiners. After the taster, PH Orange runs on a monthly direct debit covering all 39 term-time lessons a year, plus access to our holiday courses for just £1 per course across ten weeks of school holidays.

• Southgate
• Enfield
If you're in or around North London - including Palmers Green, Edmonton, Cockfosters, Barnet, Potters Bar and the surrounding areas - one of our venues will be within easy reach.
