Tennis Coaching for 8 and 9 Year Olds in North London - PH Red at PH Tennis

PH Red is where tennis really starts.

By eight or nine, children who've come through the earlier stages have the structure of the game embedded - they can score, serve, call the ball and run their own points without thinking about it. That frees them up to do the thing tennis is actually about: play. Compete. Express themselves. Start to discover the kind of player they want to be.

PH Red is the stage where all of that comes together. Here's what it involves and why it's such an important step.

Quick Summary

Ages 8-9 · 90 minutes · Max 12 players across 4 mini red courts (just 3 per court) · LTA qualified coaches · Available at Winchmore Hill, Southgate and Enfield

PH Red is where children move onto a full mini red court and start playing properly. With the rules and scoring already second nature from PH Purple, lessons revolve around match play, tactics, creativity and competing. Children begin experimenting with how they like to play and developing their own identity on court, while entering tournaments for the first time. Progress runs through three levels (Red One, Two and Three - bronze, silver, gold) before moving up to PH Orange. The same taster, monthly direct debit and £1 holiday courses apply as across all our mini tennis stages.

What Is PH Red?

PH Red is our programme for children aged eight and nine, and it's a genuine turning point on the pathway.

The court grows to a full mini red size - the doubles line now becomes the baseline, giving children the full mini court to play across. And because they already have the rules, scoring and etiquette down from PH Purple, they're free to start playing real, competitive tennis. This is the stage where children begin entering tournaments and where the lessons shift firmly towards match play.

New to Tennis? Joining Red Midway Is No Problem

Plenty of children join at PH Red without having done the earlier stages, and that's completely fine. The lessons are adapted so that children new to the sport can pick up the basics while still playing and competing alongside everyone else.

One of the most powerful tools we use for this is varying the number of touches and bounces. In the same PH Red game, one child might be playing proper tennis rules - one bounce, one touch - while a child who has just started might be allowed two bounces, two touches, or even unlimited touches and bounces to get the ball back over. The two can rally and compete against each other perfectly happily, just playing to slightly different rules.

This is our constraints-led approach in action. By adjusting the constraints for each child, we challenge both players appropriately at the same time - the experienced one is stretched, the newcomer is supported, and both are genuinely competing and improving. No child is left behind, and no child is held back.

Match Play, Tactics and Controlling Time and Space

With the fundamentals already in place, PH Red lessons revolve around actually playing - and playing with purpose.

We start developing the children's tactical understanding: the idea of controlling time and space on the court. How do you move your opponent? Where's the space to aim for? How do you give yourself more time, or take it away from the player across the net? These are the questions that turn ball-striking into genuine tennis, and PH Red is where children begin to explore them.

Crucially, this is all built on reception skills and rallying - the ability to read, judge and respond to the incoming ball, then rally with intent rather than just keeping it going. Everything flows from there. A child who can receive the ball well and rally with purpose has the foundation to compete, and competing is what PH Red is all about.

Developing an Identity - The PH Tennis Difference

Here's where our approach really stands apart.

Rather than telling children the "right" way to play, we encourage them to experiment and discover the kind of player they want to be. At this age children start to show different instincts, and we actively encourage them to explore them:

Do they want to shorten rallies - hit the ball hard and into space, taking time away from their opponent?

Or do they want to lengthen rallies - play patiently, stay steady, and wait for the right moment?

There's no single correct answer. These are different characteristics, different ways of competing, and we let children try them all out to understand which way they naturally prefer to play. We don't dictate. We create the situations and let them find their own solutions - which is exactly how a genuine playing identity develops.

This is one of the most important and distinctive things we do. A child who discovers how *they* like to play - rather than being moulded into one prescribed style - develops confidence, ownership and a love of competing that lasts.

New Sensations - From Push to Stroke

As children move further back on a bigger court, they need to generate more depth - and that calls for a new sensation.

In PH Blue we focused on the tap. In PH Purple we added the push. Now, in PH Red, we introduce something more like a stroke or a guide - a longer follow-through that lets children send the ball deeper into the court. This natural progression of sensations - tap, push, stroke - gives children an intuitive way to control depth and power without getting tangled in technical instruction.

Some children will also start learning to serve and volley at this stage, beginning to explore the different ways a point can be constructed and won.

Tournaments - Putting It Into Practice

Because PH Red children have the structure and the skills, they're ready to compete properly - and this is the stage where tournament play begins.

Tournaments give the lessons a purpose. They're where children test the identity they're developing, apply their tactics under real pressure, and experience genuine competition in a supportive environment. Having somewhere to play outside of class - and something to aim for within it - transforms how engaged and motivated children become.

Space to Develop - The Court Setup

A quick but important point on how we run PH Red sessions.

The ratio rises to a maximum of twelve players per coach - but we use four mini red courts, which means just three players per court. That's deliberate. Plenty of space and plenty of time means children can develop a genuine whole-court game. They're not crammed in, queuing, or waiting for a turn. They're playing, rallying and competing with the room to actually move and learn.

This is exactly the kind of player-to-court ratio that makes the difference between real development and a busy, crowded session.

The Coaching Approach

PH Red continues our constraints-led coaching philosophy - and at this stage its value is clearer than ever. By designing situations and letting children find their own solutions, we allow each player to develop their own tactical understanding and playing identity, rather than being pushed towards one prescribed way of playing. It's the approach that makes the "discover how you like to play" philosophy possible.

Court, Equipment and Session Length

Court - a full mini red court, with the doubles line now serving as the baseline.

Session length - 90 minutes, consistent across all our mini tennis stages.

Groups - a maximum of twelve players per coach, across four mini red courts, for just three players per court.

Progress Tracking and Medals

Every PH Red player has an online progress profile parents can log into at any time, updated regularly by their coach. Progress runs through three levels, the same clear structure as across our mini tennis programme:

        Red One - Bronze

        Red Two - Silver

        Red Three - Gold

A medal is awarded at each level. After achieving Red Three Gold, children progress to PH Orange - our programme for ten and eleven year olds.

Our Coaches

All PH Red sessions are delivered by LTA qualified coaches, each holding an appropriate DBS check, first aid certification and safeguarding training. They coach in PH Tennis uniform and are trained in our constraints-led methodology.
