Adult Beginner Tennis Lessons in North London - Start Playing at PH Tennis

The hardest part of starting tennis as an adult isn't the tennis. It's walking in the first time.

Almost everyone who joins our beginner classes is nervous about it. They worry they'll be the worst one there. They worry they'll look silly. They worry that everyone else already knows each other and they'll be the odd one out turning up alone.

None of it turns out to be true - and here's the thing worth knowing before you book: every single person in that group started exactly where you are. They all walked in on their own, nervous, having never played. They know precisely what it feels like, which is why it's one of the most welcoming environments you'll find.

Quick Summary

Adult beginners · 90 minutes · Up to 12 players, six per court · Monthly direct debit · Any extra class for £1 · LTA qualified coaches · Winchmore Hill, Southgate and Enfield

Our beginner classes are for anyone starting from scratch - whether you've never played, played at school decades ago, or come from another racket sport. The focus is on getting you rallying quickly by building your reception skills, alongside learning to serve consistently and getting the rules and scoring to feel automatic. Come on your own; everyone else did.

It's Fine to Come On Your Own

Most people do.

Everyone in the group started at some point as a beginner, on their own, feeling exactly what you're feeling. That shared experience is what makes the environment what it is - lighthearted, supportive, and completely fine with mistakes. You'll laugh at your own shots. So will everyone else. Nobody is taking it seriously in the way you're worried they might be.

We're big on the idea that everyone is responsible for everyone else's learning. It's not a group of individuals having private lessons in parallel - it's a group learning together. When a player progresses and moves up out of the beginner class, everyone celebrates it, because everyone had a hand in getting them there.

The only thing that really matters on your first lesson is that you try. If people see you trying, they'll help you - the coach obviously, but the other players too. That's the culture.

Wherever You're Starting From Is Fine

It genuinely doesn't matter where you're coming from:

Never played at all - most common, completely fine

Played as a kid or at school and haven't touched a racket in twenty years

Played other racket sports - badminton, squash, padel, table tennis - and fancy giving tennis a go

All of these are normal. The class is built to take you from wherever you are.

Why Tennis Is a Great Sport to Start as an Adult

If you're weighing up what to take up, tennis has a lot going for it:

Low impact - much kinder on your joints than running, and something you can play for decades

Outdoors - fresh air, daylight, away from screens

Sociable - you're playing with people, not staring at a wall or a treadmill display

Genuinely good for fitness - movement, coordination, cardiovascular work, all without it feeling like exercise

A sport for life - people play tennis into their seventies and beyond

It's one of the few sports where you can start at forty and still be playing at seventy-five.

What You'll Actually Learn

Our beginner classes are built around one goal: getting you rallying. Because once you can rally, you're playing tennis - and everything else builds from there.

We start close and work back

We always start with taps at the net - short, controlled contact so you learn what a clean strike feels like. Then we work back to the service line and introduce pushes. Then, when you get to the back of the court, we let you find your own solution - it might be a guide, a stroke, or a faster push. Whatever works for your body.

Reception skills are the real secret

Here's something most beginners are never told: the hardest skill in tennis isn't hitting the ball. It's receiving it.

Reading where the ball is going to be. Moving to get there. Not getting too close to the bounce. Moving away from the bounce. Letting the ball drop. Getting the ball at the right height. Being sideways. Being stopped. Having the racket out to the side of you.

That's the skill that takes longest to build - and the only way to build it is live repetitions. Every single time you receive a ball, you're getting better at reading that information, and you get quicker at it.

This is why we don't teach beginners big, fast swings. If you learn to hit long and hard from day one, your shots might look good - but you'll never be able to receive the ball coming back, and you won't be able to rally. So we build reception first. And every rally you play develops your sending skills at the same time.

The result is that beginners start feeling like they're actually playing tennis surprisingly quickly.

Serving and the Rules

Two other things we focus on at beginner level.

Serving. You need to be able to serve consistently overarm before you move up. Get that right at beginner level and you can do proper serving drills, play practice matches and enjoy doubles at intermediate without double faulting constantly.

The rules and scoring. There's a real focus on knowing the rules, calling mistakes and keeping score. Beginners often find it genuinely hard to remember the score while also trying to remember what they're supposed to be doing with their feet.

That's normal. But when calling the ball out and keeping score start happening automatically in the background - freeing up your attention to actually think about what you're working on - that's a big step. It's one of the clearest signs you're getting ready for intermediate.

How the Sessions Feel

Open and active. You won't be standing in a queue and you won't be basket-fed balls one at a time while everyone watches. You'll be playing.

We teach core principles - getting your racket behind the ball, turning sideways, being stopped - but we don't force everyone into one identical technique. Every adult has their own body and their own way of moving. We guide you with the principles that genuinely make you better, then let you develop the game that works for you.

You Don't Need to Bring Anything

Another barrier worth removing: you don't need to own a racket to start.

We have rackets available to borrow, so you can turn up to your beginner lessons with nothing and just play. No spending money on kit before you even know whether you'll enjoy it.

When you do get into it and want your own racket, we can help. We're a specialist racket shop as well as a coaching provider, so you can get proper advice on choosing a racket that's right for you - at whatever price point suits. If you want something entry level, we'll point you to the right option. If you want something better, you can demo a racket properly before committing. Either way, you're not guessing.

Shoes are the other thing worth knowing about. Proper tennis shoes become a genuine requirement by the time you move up to intermediate - by then you're moving enough that you need the support, and normal trainers won't cut it. We can advise on the right shoes when you're ready, and our players get additional discounts in store.

The point is simply that none of it needs to happen on day one. Come and play first.

You Can See Where You're Heading

One nice thing about how we schedule: the intermediate class always runs right next door.

So while you're in the beginner group, you can see players rallying properly, serving, playing points - players who were sitting exactly where you are not that long ago. It's genuinely inspiring, and it shows you exactly what you're working towards. That's a much better motivator than being told about it.

How the Programme Works

You pay a monthly direct debit for your regular weekly class, which runs 45 weeks a year. And you can book any additional class for just £1 - to make up a session you've missed, or simply to play more.

That last part matters more than it sounds. Volume is what makes you better, and at £1 a class there's nothing stopping you playing two or three times a week if you want to improve quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

I've never played tennis at all. Is this right for me?

Yes. That's exactly who beginner classes are for.

Can I come on my own?

Yes - most people do. Everyone in the group started on their own too, which is why it's such a welcoming environment.

I played at school 20 years ago. Beginner or intermediate?

Almost certainly beginner. If in doubt, get in touch and we'll help place you.

I play badminton/squash/padel - does that help?

It helps with hand-eye coordination, though tennis reception skills are quite different. You'd still start at beginner level.

Will I be stood in a queue?

No. Sessions are open and game-based. You'll be playing.

How long are sessions?

90 minutes.

How many people are in a class?

Up to 12, with six per court.

Do I need my own racket?

No. We have rackets you can borrow, so you can come to your first lessons with nothing at all. When you're ready to buy one, our shop team can advise on the right racket at whatever price point suits, and you can demo one properly before committing.

Do I need special shoes?

Not to start - normal trainers are fine for beginner classes. Proper tennis shoes become a requirement by intermediate level, when you're moving enough to need the support. We can advise when you're ready, and our players get discounts in store.

How do I know when I'm ready to move up?

When your shot quality and movement have developed, and when calling the score and the lines has become automatic. Your coach will let you know.

What if I miss a week?

Book into any other class for £1.
